Hi, I'm Sarah Douthat, and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. First off, I want to thank you for taking the time to view this website and hopefully learn more about our FFA organization. This year, I have the honor of serving as your 2017-2018 West Greene FFA Chapter President. As president, it is my duty to lead our chapter "out of the darkness of selfishness and into the glorious sunlight of brotherhood and cooperation." While this may seem like a large task, I know it can be accomplished with the support of my fellow officers. I am so thankful for the opportunity to lead this chapter alongside such amazing people. People like this are the reason I decided to run for an office again this year. Every time I am around other FFA members, their passion for agriculture and FFA fuels me. It reminds me that I am a part of something bigger. I want to impact others in the same way that they and this organization has impacted me.
My whole life, I've been on a farm. Before I was born, my dad owned a dairy, and we used to row crop. I always felt included in this aspect of our family because every summer, my dad made sure to have a baby calf for me. It was my sole responsibility to feed and care for this calf. Looking back, I can see that this is really where my love for agriculture (more specifically cows) began. It only seemed fitting that when it came time to choose a Supervised Agricultural Experience that I return to my roots. So, I chose beef production. It consists of purchasing six to eight Holstein bull calves in the spring to raise and sell the following spring. Though it was tough at times, my favorite part is the first couple of months of bottle feeding. While I'm not a fan of the early mornings, these calves have taught me a thing or two about responsibility. Because of this sector of the FFA, I am a better person. I have acquired life skills that can't be taught in a classroom. And, I wouldn't trade one second of it for anything.
Outside of FFA and calves, I am a senior at West Greene High School where I am involved in several other extracurriculars. Some of my favorites are the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Yearbook Staff, Student Council, and the National Honor Society. I also throw shot put and discus for the track team, and I manage the softball, volleyball, and girls' basketball teams. When I am not busy with school-related activities, I love to read and spend time with my closest friends. I honestly don't know what I would do without them.
As a senior, I have been thinking a lot about my future. And though I love agriculture, animals, and FFA, I have a passion for helping people. Once I graduate, I plan on attending college and majoring in Biology Pre-Med. I have aspirations to enter the pediatric field, possibly specializing in pediatric oncology. Though some may think this has nothing to do with FFA, they couldn't be farther from the truth. It is because of FFA that I know I can succeed in anything I do. Because of this organization, I know about hard work, dedication, responsibility, and leadership. These are all qualities I will need to pursue this career or any career I choose.
Before FFA and officer roles, I am first and foremost a daughter of the One True King. I always grew up in a Christian home. I had great parents, and I was really blessed. When I was eight, I asked Jesus to come into my heart. I thought I understood what I was doing, but I really think I just wanted to eat the cracker and drink the juice at Communion. From then on, I called myself a Christian, but I was actually just going through the motions. Then, when I was fourteen, my dad passed away suddenly, and this really crushed me. I was so angry at everyone, especially God. I strayed so far from God I didn't think I could go back. He died in March, and that November, my church went to Hearts on Fire, a Christian conference/concert. The speaker asked the question that if you were to die tonight, are you 100% sure you would go to Heaven. I wasn't, but I am now. That is the night I truly started my walk with Christ. It has definitely not been easy, but I am trying my best. I continue to sin, but I have a God that continues to forgive. And, I am not perfect, but I serve a perfect God.
Once again, thank you for your interest in our chapter and this organization. My contact information is below. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Whether it's FFA, cows, God, or anything else, I truly look forward to answering your questions. I have high hopes for this year. Let's make it the best one yet! God bless!
